If you haven’t already heard, the bitcoin wallet MultiBit is no longer supported. Check out the announcement here.

I was having issues back in late May and tried to move some funds out. It took just over 2 weeks for the transaction to be confirmed using the default fee setting!

This blog link provides instructions on how to move to an Electrum wallet.

Electrum was a good wallet for a while. It then started getting buggy and I had to keep going to Manage wallet > Repair wallet just to get the correct amount showing.

You need the seed in order to move the funds to Electrum. If you DO NOT have the seed but you still have access to the wallet, create a new wallet in MultiBit, write down the seed and then empty the funds from the first wallet to the second wallet.

Here is how:

  1. Create a new wallet using the Create button on the Unlock screen when you first open the wallet.
  2. Make sure you write down your wallet words and date stamp as usual
  3. Unlock the new wallet and wait for sync to finish
  4. Rename the wallet to Wallet2 for example.
  5. Create a new receiving address and copy it to the clipboard – you don’t need an amount.
  6. Use Exit/Switch and select Switch to return to the Unlock screen
  7. Unlock the old wallet and wait for sync to finish
  8. Use Manage Wallet | Empty wallet to spend all your funds to the new wallet address
  9. Do not delete your old wallet – others may still accidentally spend into it and you’ll need to access it to sweep those funds

Now that you’ve got the seed for the new wallet, you can proceed to restore it in Electrum.

  1. Hi,

I transferred in 2016 some coins to Multibit and now checked the status as ‘UNCONFIRMED’ so I sent a support email to Multibit to find they are no longer supported.

What are my options now and is Electrum the only site I can load the coins (unconfirmed status? – blockchain show the coins as received)

  2. It looks like you have a couple spelling errors on your website such as the word “Phillipines”. Check out a service like SpellAce.com to help. We’ve used it in the past and liked it.
